The course I have done on March 2016 in Puerto Rico is the first official of Amaury Academy as the concept was created at the end of 2015. Jony Perez, the official dealer for Sniper in Central America, and me have been working hard to organise this week of training and we are super stoked of this experience. There were 50 people in total during the week. All with a different level but we have worked on the basis of the sport so it was great for everyone. In bodyboarding you can´t burn the steps and before to try an air reverse, you have to work on how to get speed, how to get the right position on the board and how to read the ocean and the waves.
Puerto Rico is a very good place to train. It is a tropical island with nice beaches, good waves and a big bodyboarding culture. We located the course in the town of Aguadilla in the North West of the island. This is the area where the APB contest happened last year, on the spot called Middles. It gets pretty much all the swell directions and when the conditions are good, there are so many options and you don´t know where to go.
We have been lucky to get a nice swell during the week, we surfed on six different spots, always with fun conditions and sun everyday. The local Sniper team was there to help, to share waves and to learn from each other which was awesome. We shared everyday working on the waves and on the beach with technical work in the morning and in the afternoon. We had some long chats about the sport, about competition, about training, nutrition about life, about balance…and many other things.
It was also great to work with a lot of girls as it is always a pleasure to see them riding. Bodyboarding use to be so popular with many women in the water but today it seems like there are less girls riding specially in Europe. I had like eight girls training and they all brought a lot of light to the courses.
A special thanks to Ike Rafols who has given me the opportunity to spend a moment in the water with Rob, a young autistic in love with bodyboarding and who takes the Ocean as a therapy. Don’t forget that for many people on this planet the ocean is the best therapy ever!
I have been learned as a teacher, as a rider and as a person and this was a rich experience to share my experience, to find the best way to explain my thoughts and to organise the technical, physical and mental preparation, all this speaking in Spanish.
I am super grateful to all the people involved in this project and we are already working of the Amaury Aacademy 2017!
