Madeira, a Portuguese island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. People call it « The garden of the Atlantic » for how beautiful is the island. It was the first time for me overthere and i actaully loved it so much that im planning to come back later this year to score some waves. A mix of Canarys and Reunion with this balance between the sea and the mountains that i like so much..Everytime i go on a island i realise how much i like it and the islander i am..So much micro climats on this little peace of earth that make this place really special.
The bodyboard community is quiet strong with passionate riders and few generations ripping the waves since decades already. Today i could feel the community needs to be more structured and organized to grow. Structure is super important for the sport. For the riders of today but also for the generations to come. To have attention from the gouvernment for exemple or from some parents that would like to push their kids in the sport, bodyboarding needs structure.
With this goal in mind, Monica Viveiros, opened MADSEA – Bodyboard and More. They are dedicated to the promotion of bodyboarding in madeira. They invite locals and tourists to discover, or rediscover the island from the sea, and experience the thrill that this extreme sport as to offer.
Earlier this year, they contacted me to see if i was keen to organize something with them and of course i was super exited to come ! So we have been working on the project for the last few months and everything went so good thanks to their work !
They received me so well and i could not believed how great was organised the trip. The crew present to the course was super nice and i could feel how motivated they were. Same thing at every course i did, everyone had a different level and a different vision of the sport which is so good for me as a teacher.
The first day they bring me in the mountain to do some mountain bike which was the first time for me..Such a crazy sport that you better be super confident and ready to go down…In the afternoon we did the first training on a black sand beachie of the north shore. After that we went free surfing on a famous break next to it and that was one of my best surf of the month !
Most of the mornings after we did some technical training at the beach. First i was watching them from the beach to analyse their position and style on the wave to see what they have to work most and then i was jumping in the water to help them at the line up, to watch the details from closer and sometimes to push them in the waves.
An intense course with long days of training, cruising, talking, sharing..finishing most of the time with a really good meal and a deep sleep until the next day to start again.. An intense island rythme that i love so much !!
Im super thanksfull for this time spending there and i really hope to come back next year for an other great course like this one !
